NextEra Energy operates Florida Power & Light (the largest regulated utility in the US) and NextEra Energy Resources (the world's largest renewable energy developer). Its 35GW+ of wind and solar generating capacity dwarfs any competitor. Its development pipeline of 300GW+ spans every US state. NextEra is simultaneously a reliable dividend utility and the fastest-growing clean energy company in the world.
Key relationships in depth
NextEra Energy and Microsoft entered a major Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for clean energy, with Microsoft purchasing renewable electricity from NextEra's wind and solar projects to meet its carbon-zero data center commitments. Microsoft has signed some of the largest corporate renewable energy deals in history as its AI data center buildout dramatically increases electricity consumption.
Why it matters: Microsoft committed to being carbon negative by 2030 and is building $80B+ in data center infrastructure annually, much of it power-hungry AI compute. NextEra is the world's largest renewable energy company with 35GW+ of operating capacity. Pairing Microsoft's demand commitment with NextEra's development pipeline creates bankable long-term contracts that enable NextEra to finance new projects.
NextEra Energy & Amazon
Amazon has signed multiple Power Purchase Agreements with NextEra Energy to supply renewable electricity for AWS data centers, making NextEra one of Amazon's largest clean energy suppliers. Amazon is the world's largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, having committed to 100% renewable energy for AWS operations, and NextEra's project pipeline is a primary source of that supply.
Why it matters: AWS's $115B annual revenue depends on data centers that consume enormous amounts of electricity. Amazon committed to net-zero carbon by 2040 and 100% renewable energy across AWS by 2025. NextEra is the most reliable US renewable developer able to supply power at the scale AWS requires across multiple states.
NextEra Energy & Tesla
NextEra Energy is one of the largest buyers of Tesla's Megapack utility-scale battery storage systems, deploying them alongside wind and solar generation assets to provide grid-stabilizing energy storage. Megapack units are integrated into NextEra's renewable projects to store excess generation and discharge during peak demand, earning grid ancillary services revenue.
Why it matters: NextEra finished 2025 with a 30 GW renewable and storage backlog after adding 13.5 GW in the year, its fourth consecutive record origination year. Battery storage is essential to NextEra's business model: solar and wind generate power intermittently, and storage converts them into dispatchable baseload-competitive assets. Tesla's Megapack 3 (5.0 MWh per unit, unveiled Sept 2025) offers higher density at lower cost per MWh.
ExxonMobil and NextEra Energy have partnered to develop a 1.2 GW natural gas power plant with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) specifically to power AI data centers. The project targets major hyperscalers as customers seeking carbon-abated power for their facilities, combining ExxonMobil's CCS expertise with NextEra's power generation capabilities. ExxonMobil's Low Carbon Solutions division views CCS-enabled natural gas as a bridge fuel for data center electrification.
Why it matters: AI data centers require massive, reliable, 24/7 power that intermittent renewables cannot provide consistently. ExxonMobil has both the natural gas supply chain and subsurface carbon storage expertise (through its Stratus carbon storage hub in Texas) to enable true low-carbon baseload power for hyperscalers. NextEra brings utility-scale power generation operations and customer relationships with hyperscalers who have committed to carbon neutrality goals. The project competes with nuclear and battery storage for data center power contracts.
