Lam Research is one of TSMC's largest equipment suppliers, providing etch, deposition, and surface preparation systems deployed across every TSMC technology node from mature 28nm through leading-edge 2nm and future 1.6nm processes. Lam's tools are essential for TSMC's high-volume manufacturing in Taiwan, as well as its new fabs in Arizona and Japan where Lam equipment is being installed at significant scale.
Why it matters: TSMC's aggressive 3-year capex plan of over $100 billion (2025-2027) represents Lam's single largest demand driver, as each new TSMC fab requires hundreds of etch and deposition chambers from Lam. Co-engineering relationships between Lam's process engineers and TSMC's integration teams over decades have created deep switching costs and first-call status for Lam when TSMC qualifies new process steps.
