Tencent & Apple
Tencent's WeChat, with 1.3B monthly active users, is distributed through the Apple App Store and represents one of the most strategically sensitive relationships in Apple's global business. WeChat mini-programs, the in-app ecosystem of lightweight apps, function as a parallel application platform within iOS. Apple has historically allowed WeChat's mini-program ecosystem despite it competing with the App Store model.
Why it matters: WeChat is effectively a social infrastructure layer in China, where removing it from iOS would render iPhone non-functional as a communication device for Chinese users. Apple's China revenue represented roughly $72B in fiscal 2023 or approximately 18% of total Apple revenue. The WeChat dependency creates leverage that Tencent holds over Apple in China market access negotiations.
