Lucid Motors & Tesla
Lucid Group and Tesla compete in the ultra-premium electric vehicle segment, with Lucid Air targeting buyers of Tesla Model S and potentially Porsche Taycan. Lucid's Air Dream Edition achieved the longest range of any production EV at 516 miles per charge, directly challenging Tesla's Model S Long Range on its primary performance differentiator. Lucid was founded by former Tesla employees including ex-Tesla CTO Peter Rawlinson, and its Wunderbox charging technology was originally developed for Tesla projects.
Why it matters: Lucid's technological advantage in powertrain efficiency (requiring fewer batteries to achieve greater range) represents a potential long-term competitive threat to Tesla in the luxury EV segment if Lucid can achieve production scale. However, Lucid's production volumes (approximately 9,000 vehicles in 2024) are a fraction of Tesla's, and its Saudi Aramco-backed financial support gives it runway to develop technology that may eventually challenge Tesla in markets like Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund-sponsored Vision 2030 EV adoption.
