Lumentum & Apple
Lumentum supplies the vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) that power iPhone's Face ID system and, in Pro models, the LiDAR scanner. VCSELs project the invisible infrared dot pattern that Face ID uses to map a user's face in three dimensions. Lumentum also supplies the illumination lasers for the TrueDepth camera flood illuminator.
Why it matters: Face ID is one of Apple's most distinctive security and authentication features and has been standard on Pro iPhones since the iPhone X in 2017. The LiDAR scanner in Pro models enables augmented reality features and significantly improves low-light autofocus. Both systems depend on Lumentum's VCSEL technology, which Apple has co-developed to very tight specifications.
