Zoom & Microsoft
Zoom and Microsoft Teams are the two dominant enterprise video conferencing and collaboration platforms, in direct competition for the same corporate communication budgets. Microsoft Teams was rapidly adopted during COVID-19 in 2020 and grew to 320 million monthly active users by 2024, competing directly with Zoom's 300+ million daily meeting participants. Microsoft's bundling of Teams with Microsoft 365 subscriptions at no additional cost creates a structural pricing advantage that Zoom must constantly overcome with feature differentiation.
Why it matters: Enterprise communication platforms are winner-take-most markets where IT departments prefer standardizing on a single platform for compliance, integration, and cost reasons, making the Zoom vs. Teams battle a zero-sum competition for enterprise standardization decisions. Microsoft's ability to include Teams in Microsoft 365 licenses (paying customers were already paying for the bundle) effectively made Teams free for most enterprises, forcing Zoom to justify its $15-20/user/month subscription in competition with a bundled product.
