Key relationships in depth

Ford & Alphabet

Ford and Google have a comprehensive technology partnership launched in 2021 under the Latitude umbrella, with Google Cloud as Ford's preferred cloud platform and Android Automotive OS in Ford and Lincoln vehicles. The partnership includes co-development of new connected vehicle services, over-the-air software update capabilities, and AI-powered vehicle analytics running on Google Cloud. Ford's Blue Oval Intelligence platform for software-defined vehicles is built on Google Cloud infrastructure.

Why it matters: Ford's transformation to a software and services business model requires cloud-scale AI and data analytics capabilities that Ford cannot build internally, making Google Cloud a strategic partner for Ford's ambition to generate software and services revenue from its installed vehicle base. Android Automotive in Ford vehicles gives Google data access to millions of American drivers' behaviors and location data, making Ford's fleet one of Google's largest connected vehicle data sources.

Ford & Tesla

Ford became the first major legacy automaker to announce NACS adoption in May 2023, allowing F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and E-Transit customers access to Tesla Superchargers. Ford's announcement triggered a cascade of NACS adoptions across the industry and ultimately led to NACS becoming the SAE J3400 industry standard.

Why it matters: Ford's EV program had struggled with charging infrastructure as a persistent consumer complaint. Access to Tesla's Supercharger network addressed this directly. The speed of Ford's NACS announcement, before it was even an official standard, reflected how decisive Tesla's charging advantage had become.
