Key relationships in depth

Rivian & Amazon

Amazon invested over $1.3B in Rivian and placed an order for 100,000 electric delivery vans, making Rivian Amazon's exclusive EV delivery vehicle supplier. The Amazon EDV (Electric Delivery Van) began rolling out in 2022 and represents the largest EV commercial vehicle order in history. Amazon owns approximately 17% of Rivian.

Why it matters: Amazon's climate pledge commits to net-zero by 2040, and last-mile delivery is one of its largest emissions sources. Converting its van fleet to electric eliminates a significant portion of Scope 1 emissions while reducing fuel cost exposure. The Rivian partnership gives Amazon dedicated EV supply that general market procurement cannot provide.

Rivian & Tesla

Rivian adopted Tesla's NACS (North American Charging Standard) connector, giving Rivian EV owners access to Tesla's Supercharger network of 60,000+ charging stalls across North America. The partnership represents Tesla's charging standard winning the format war against the legacy CCS connector used by most non-Tesla EVs.

Why it matters: Range anxiety is the largest barrier to EV adoption. By opening the Supercharger network to competitors via NACS licensing, Tesla transformed its charging infrastructure from a competitive moat into a revenue-generating service. For Rivian, gaining Supercharger access improved vehicle utility and reduced the burden of building a proprietary charging network.
